Exploring Margaret River beyond the vines

Famous for wine, find caves, culture and spectacular coastlines.

While Margaret River is well known for its world-class wineries (and yes, they’re absolutely worth the hype), there is so much more to this region than swirling a glass. With its epiccoastline, towering f orests, hidden caves and laid-back coastal towns – there’s plenty of reasons to make you want to extend your time here a little longer.

Once you’re all wined out (or in need of a little break), here are some of our favourite things to
do beyond the vines.

Local Dining

Home to some of Australia’s premium wine, it’s no surprise the region also packs a punch when it comes to gourmet food experiences too.

Local chefs make the most of the incredible fresh produce and natural surroundings, turning what’s grown, raised, and caught nearby into unforgettable meals. Indulge in a paired cheese and wine degustation, taste artisan chocolate, enjoy a hearty pub feed and savour award-winning olive oil varieties. Come hungry, you’ll want to try it all!

 

Art and Culture

The region has a vibrant and ever-growing art and cultural scene, with galleries, small museums and public art scattered throughout.

Explore a wood gallery and hear stories of how the timber industry has shaped the region. In Busselton, wander down the longest timber pile jetty in the southern hemisphere, discover something new at the Busselton Jetty Discovery Centre or take a guided tour of the tallest lighthouse in mainland Australia – Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse.

 

Spectacular Caves

More than 150 limestone caves lie beneath the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, with four open to explore in the Margaret River region: Ngilgi, Mammoth, Jewel and Lake Cave.

These caves hold special meaning for our family, Lincoln’s grandfather and Neil’s dad, Dudley McLeod, was a Mammoth Cave guide in the 1950s and later played a key role in bringing the caves under Visitor Centre management, helping protect them and promote the region as a growing tourism destination.

 

Forest Walks

The region is rich in biodiversity, with the abundance and preservation of unique and diverse species of flora and fauna. If you’re heading down past Margaret River, take a drive through the Boranup Karri Forest.

Filled with towering karri trees, some over 60m in height, the forest is a feast for the senses with a diverse range of flora and fauna calling the area home.

 

Stunning Beaches

Alongside the famous wineries, and stunning forests, the region is lined with must-visit beaches boasting white sand and crystal-clear waters. It’s very easy to find your own little slice of paradise, with hundreds of secluded spots along the coastline to explore. From the sheltered bay of Hamelin Bay to the famous Gnaranup Beach surf break, and everything in between,
there’s something for all beach lovers to enjoy.
