Craft Beer, Wine Tasting & the Margaret River Chocolate Company
On day one we make the journey from Perth to Margaret River via the famous Busselton Jetty. It’s the longest jetty in the southern hemisphere stretching 1.8km out into picturesque Geographe Bay.
We arrive in Margaret River in time for a delicious lunch and a local beer or wine at Cowaramup Brewery. Taste your way through their award winning craft beer with a tasting paddle, or pick your favourite pint. If wine is your preference, there are local whites, reds and a sparkling wine to choose from.
After lunch we’ll visit two boutique wineries where cellar door staff will guide you through some superb Margaret River wines. Margaret River produces only 2% of Australia’s wine, but around 20% of Australia’s premium product. While we’re best known for Cabernet, Chardonnay and the iconic Margaret River “SBS blend” you’ll have the chance to sample other quality varietals too.
The afternoon continues some sensational local produce including chocolate from the much-loved Margaret River Chocolate Company. We taste cheese at the Margaret River Dairy Company and olive oil, balsamic vinegar and condiments at either Ollio Bello or Pukara Estate.
Throughout the day you’ll also appreciate the incredible natural beauty of Margaret River’s lush forests, rolling hills and opulent vineyards. It’s one of Australia’s most stunning wine regions. We drive down winding roads through natural Australian bush, you’ll also spy karri trees and possibly some kangaroos. The tour finishes on a high note at one of our superb beaches – we stop at either Gracetown or Surfers Point to take in the spectacular ocean view.
Surfing Gnarabup, Lake Cave & Boranup Forest
Day Two is a lot of fun, we explore the region’s spectacular coast and caves, and a scenic drive through the forest. Start the day in style with breakfast at White Elephant Café. Perched opposite the beach in Gnarabup, you can take in the amazing ocean views and have a surf check too.
After breakkie we hit the water, either in a surfing lesson or kayaking on the Margaret River. First time surfers are welcome – you’ll have the guidance of an experienced surf coach to help you catch a wave. Josh Palmateer’s Surf School taught our kids to surf many moons ago. It’s an absolute blast and well worth a try! If surfing is not for you, we can arrange a more relaxing but just as enjoyable kayak ride along the Margaret River.
We dry off then take a drive through the incredible Boranup Forest to arrive at Lake Cave. There’s over 200 known caves in the 120km stretch between Cape Naturaliste in the north and Cape Leeuwin in the south. Lake Cave is a “mirrored wonderland” that lays below the forest floor. Spectacular crystal formations are suspended above water, and thought to be around a million years old. Enjoy a guided tour of the cave. We’ll be sure to get some photos in the Boranup Forest before heading north again for lunch at Olio Bello.
Olio Bello produces award winning olive oil and olive products – you can taste everything in their tasting room, then relax and enjoy a well-deserved lunch. Their pastas (all home made) and pizzas are delicious.
After lunch we head back to Perth. Relax and enjoy the ride – you’ll probably be tired after the surf!
You have 2 fantastic accommodation options to choose from.
Camping in a Safari tent nestled amongst the forest at Wharncliffe Mill Bush Retreat.
Or a studio apartment in the 4-star Margarets Beach Resort in Gnarabup, a short 500m walk from the beach. You can dine at your leisure (evening meal at your own expense) before retiring for the evening.
