Spanning 130km from Busselton in the north, all the way down to Augusta and Cape Leeuwin in the south – the Margaret River region is not only stunningly beautiful but BIG too. With over 100 cellar doors open to visitors, and great distances to cover, taking an organised wine tour of Margaret River is the best way to really get under the skin of this incredible wine paradise.

One of the world’s youngest wine regions, the region quickly grew its name for wine back in 1967 when the first planting was made at Vasse Felix. The region’s untouched environment, unique geography and Mediterranean climate combined to create ideal conditions for grape growing. Known for its heroes Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, the region has since achieved international acclaim and cemented itself as a leading player in winemaking across the world.

Cellar doors range from rustic, farm-inspired settings to architecturally opulent, offering experiences including laid-back cafes to top-tier dining. There are the founding cellar doors that made the region famous, namely Vasse Felix, Cullen Wines and Leeuwin Estate, but there’s also a number of lesser known talents too.

We always recommend a mix of the big names and hidden gems, to get a true sense of what this scenic wine region is about – great value, delicious and quality wine.

You could hop aboard a wine tour and visit half a dozen wineries with a token brewery thrown in to please the boys, if quantity is how you pick a tour.

Alternatively, choose a tour where you can linger longer, go ‘backstage’ into the barrel hall and explore the coast, forest and historic sites, too.

Climb mainland Australia’s tallest lighthouse, Cape Leeuwin, and marvel at the collision of the Indian and Southern Oceans, catch a stunning south west sunset at Prevelly Beach and journey underneath the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge and explore
one of the four show caves open to the public. We’ll take you to Mammoth Cave where you can marvel at the Megafauna remains.

As for the different towns that make up the region, they each have a unique charm that’ll leave you hard pressed trying to pick a favourite!

The bayside town of Busselton forms the gateway to the region. Known for the 1.8km-long, wooden piled jetty, stroll along the 159-year-old jetty or sip a craft beer with glorious foreshore views.

Home to towering karri trees, mobs of grey kangaroos, world-class surf and rolling vineyards, Margaret River is primed for travellers. Drive through the Boranup Forest and marvel at the awe-inspiring trees towering over 65-metres in height. Venture out to Main Break, Gnarabup or Surfers Point and spot the big surf breaks that attract professional surfers from around the world.

Closer to Cape Leeuwin, we’ll take you to explore the nostalgic town of Augusta, which banks onto the tranquil Blackwood River and Southern Ocean. On the Indian Ocean, you’ll find Hamelin Bay – a tourism hotspot thanks to its beautiful beaches, and the friendly wild stingrays that swim right up to the shore line.
