Leading the way to sustainability
At McLeod Tours, sustainability isn’t a buzzword. It’s part of our everyday practice.
As a family-owned business rooted in the Margaret River region for over a century, we’re deeply committed to protecting the landscapes, wildlife, and communities that make this place special. Our approach is hands-on, community-minded, and always evolving.

How the days are run
Low-Impact Touring by Design
We carefully plan each itinerary to reduce our environmental footprint. That means keeping group sizes small, minimising unnecessary travel, and choosing destinations that prioritise sustainability—like Mammoth Cave and Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, both managed by the Capes Foundation.
“Our goal is to create tours that leave a positive impact—on both the places we visit and the people who live there. It’s about meaningful connections, not just ticking off highlights,” says Lincoln McLeod.
Our guides stick to designated paths, follow strict wildlife protocols, and lead by example to ensure we tread lightly across all landscapes we visit.
Protecting Nature and Wildlife
Respect for the natural environment is core to how we operate. Our guides share stories about the region’s environmental history, from large-scale logging to present-day conservation efforts. These stories are designed to inspire reflection and a deeper connection to the land.
We also educate guests about the importance of protecting native wildlife like black cockatoos and ringtail possums—many of which rely on the very forests we’re helping to preserve.
Waste Reduction and Responsible Travel
We’re committed to a low-waste approach. Our tours use compostable serveware wherever possible, and we carry a recycling bag on board to collect guest waste and ensure it’s properly sorted.
Guests are encouraged to bring reusable water bottles, and we provide refill stations throughout the day to reduce single-use plastics.
Sharing Knowledge, Inspiring Action
Sustainability is woven into every story our guides tell. From the cultural and environmental history of the region to the work being done by organisations like Busselton Jetty, we aim to educate guests on the positive impact their choices can have.
Many walk away with a renewed appreciation of the Southwest and the importance of responsible travel.
With the region
Who we work with
Supporting Local and Sustainable Producers
Sustainability starts with supporting local. Over 90% of our suppliers are locally owned and operated, from boutique wineries to artisanal food producers. Many of these partners use certified organic or sustainably farmed ingredients, as well as eco-conscious packaging and practices.
We also love visiting single-vineyard wineries where the entire process—growing, bottling, and selling—happens in one place. This reduces transport emissions and supports small, independent winemaker
Partnerships That Make a Difference
We proudly support local conservation groups like Nature Conservation Margaret River and have been involved in initiatives such as the Arum Lily Blitz for over a decade. We also contribute significantly to the Capes Foundation, with over $36,000 raised in the past year alone through tour visits to conservation sites.
Community-First Tourism
Our commitment to sustainability is also about ensuring the local economy thrives. By working with small, ethical operators and reinvesting in the region, we help ensure Margaret River remains a vibrant, resilient community.
Behind the scenes
How the business is run
Sustainable Business Operations
Behind the scenes, we operate with the same level of care. Our office runs on solar power, we’ve moved almost entirely to digital systems to reduce paper use, and our vehicle depot uses rainwater—free from harsh chemicals—for washing our fleet.
“It’s not just about the tours—it’s about running every part of the business with care for the environment.”
Thoughtful Transport Choices
While our current fleet isn’t electric, we use fuel-efficient vehicles—two of which are powered with AdBlue to significantly reduce emissions. Our tours are designed to limit unnecessary travel and include short walks that connect guests more closely with the land
Where we’re heading
Our sustainability goals
Our future plans include:
- Becoming a certified sustainable tourism operator
- Transitioning to lower-emission vehicles
- Expanding partnerships with eco-certified businesses
We’re constantly striving to improve—for the environment, our guests, and future generations.
“We believe sustainability is more than a policy—it’s a responsibility.”
At McLeod Tours, sustainability guides every decision we make. From the routes we travel to the people we work with and the stories we share, we’re here to protect what makes Margaret River so extraordinary.
