Ultimate Margaret River must-sees for first time visitors

Famous for its fine wineries, breathtaking coastlines and serene forests, the Margaret River Region is like a treasure chest – there’s always something special to explore!

Located a scenic 3-hour drive from Perth, and spanning over 200km, the region extends from Busselton in the north along Geographe Bay, to Augusta in the south at Cape Leeuwin.

Whether you’re keen to sip on cabernet, wander the forests or relax by the beach- there’s something for everyone to enjoy. We’ve rounded up the ultimate list of things to tick off the Margaret River bucket-list if you’re visiting for the first time.

The Margaret River Region is one of the most celebrated in Australia, so it would be a shame to not visit some of the 100+ cellar doors scattered across the region. Explore the founding cellar doors that made the region famous, including Vasse Felix and Cullen Wines, but don’t forget to immerse yourself in lesser known talents too, like Domaine Naturaliste and Edwards Wines.

The region is rich in biodiversity, with the abundance and preservation of unique and diverse species of flora and fauna.

The Ludlow Tuart Forest, located in the north of the region, is the only pure tuart forest left in the world. Explore one of the many walking trails, or for those chasing an adrenaline hit – do a high ropes adventure course through the trees with Forest Adventures.

If you’re heading south towards Cape Leeuwin, be sure to make a stop at the Boranup Karri Forest. Filled with towering karri trees, some over 60m in height, the forest is a feast for the senses with a diverse range of flora and fauna calling the area home.

The world-class surf in Margaret River has been one of the defining features the region has been famous for since the 1950s. From dawn to dusk throughout the year, the break along the coastline is populated with surfers.

First time on the board? Book in a lesson with the local legends and experienced coaches at Margaret River Surf School, Yallingup Surf School and Margaret River Surfing Academy.

If you’re visiting in Autumn too, be sure to check out the annual Margaret River Pro competition, where the world’s best surfers descend upon the region to compete.

Alongside the famous wineries, and stunning forests, the region is lined with must-visit beaches boasting white sand and crystal-clear waters. It’s very easy to find your own little slice of paradise, with hundreds of secluded spots along the coastline to explore.

From the sheltered bays of Geographe Bay, such as Meelup Beach, to the rocky outcrops of Redgate Beach, and everything in between, there’s something for all beach lovers to enjoy.

A trip to the Margaret River region wouldn’t be complete without visiting the 1.814km-long, wooden piled jetty in the seaside town of Busselton. Stroll along the 148-year-old jetty or take the train to reach the Underwater Observatory at the end.

From there, explore the depths of Geographe Bay and discover more than 300 different marine species and the country’s biggest artificial reef and underwater sculpture park.

Although best known for our cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, there are a number of stellar breweries across the region making a name for themselves.

With craft beer the brew of choice, each brewery has its own distinctive style, from the ocean views of Eagle Bay Brewing Co and Shelter Brewing Co to Margaret River Beer Co and Wild Hop Brewing Co nestled in bushland.

We’re lucky to have two lighthouses – still operational – nestled in the Margaret River Region. Both exceptional attractions for young and old alike, Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse stand as our guardians of the oceans.

The tallest lighthouse in mainland Australia, Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is perched atop a rocky cape where the Indian and Southern Oceans collide, at the most south westerly point of Australia. Whilst you’re there, be sure to explore the award-winning interpretive centre too.

Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse, located in the north, also offers guided tours where you can learn about its fascinating history. There’s also a number of lovely walks to explore, including an accessible trail to iconic Sugarloaf Rock.
