Best Short Walks in the Margaret River Region
Best short walks in the Margaret River Region
We’re blessed in the Margaret River region to have swathes of natural beauty on our doorstep, from the coast to the forest, and spring sunshine provides the perfect opportunity to walk in nature and experience the natural environment that surrounds us.
Here are some of our favourite walks that are perfect for first timers visiting the region, those wanting to chase some fresh air or where you’ll get maximum delight for minimum effort.
Busselton Jetty
Forming the gateway to the Margaret River region, the seaside town of Busselton is known for its 1.8km-long, wooden piled jetty. Take a leisurely stroll along the Southern Hemisphere’s longest jetty and immerse yourself in the rich history of this iconic landmark, built in 1865.
Afterwards, be sure to pop into the Marine Discovery Centre, and embark on an interactive journey through Australia’s Marine Parks.
Fun fact: Busselton Jetty celebrates its 160th birthday this year!
Cape Naturaliste to Sugarloaf Rock
With panoramic ocean views and a smooth, accessible pathway, the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse to Sugarloaf Rock trail is a beautiful way to experience the coastline. The full track stretches 3.5km one way, but if you’re after a shorter stroll, start at Sugarloaf Rock and turn around at the half way point for the most spectacular ocean views.
Take in the lookout, capture a few photos of the iconic landmark and enjoy a relaxed wander along the trail – no need to go the whole way.
Spring tip: look out for whales in October, and dolphins over summer – the dolphins often hang out in the bay near Sugarloaf Rock.
Wadandi Track
Named for the traditional owners of the region, the 31km trail from Cowaramup to Witchcliffe, showcases the heritage of the former Busselton to Flinders Bay Railway.
Walking a section will take you through postcard views that share a rich history of the land. You can also stop at a number of cafes and restaurants for coffee, local produce, craft beer or a glass of chardonnay.
Boranup Forest
Located a short 25-minute drive south of Margaret River, Boranup Forest is one of those rare places that takes your breath away. Towering karri trees stretch skyward, their canopies covering a forest floor alive with wildflowers, orchids, and seasonal fungi, all framed by the soft scent of native peppermint trees.
Whether you choose to slowly meander along the stunning Boranup Drive—suitable for all vehicles thanks to its firm limestone base—or step out for a short walk along one of the peaceful bush trails, the forest has something for all nature lovers.
Barrett St Weir
Tucked on the edge of town and accessed through Margaret River’s Old Settlement Precinct, the Barrett Street Weir loop is a peaceful 1km trail that is perfect for those chasing a relaxing stroll. With a wide, well-defined gravel path, this easy loop takes around 25-30 minutes to complete.
The trail winds through native bushland, offering glimpses of local birdlife, seasonal wildflowers and the weir.
Rivermouth to Surfers Point
Soak up stunning coastal scenery where the river meets the sea, out to the famous surf break and home to the WSL Margaret River Pro. This is a favourite coastal stroll for us, and we share it with guests no matter the weather.
Look out for local artwork and sculptures as part of the Prevelly Art Trail – many mark the devastating 2011 wildfire that swept through the coastal hamlet.
